Nevada Firearms Coalition Urges US Mayors to Innovate Rather Than Regulate

For Immediate Release:

LAS VEGAS – The Nevada Firearms Coalition welcomes the United States Conference of Mayors to Las Vegas for their Annual Meeting and calls on Nevada mayors to be innovative in their discussions about safe communities and quit over-regulating the 2nd Amendment.

“Nevadans just said loud and clear that they opposed Bloomberg’s overreaching gun legislation, now mayors from across the country are coming to Las Vegas to discuss new strategies to over-regulate the 2nd Amendment when they really need to be talking about proven practices to reduce firearms accidents,” said Don Turner, President of the Nevada Firearms Coalition.

Turner cites the Nevada Department of Wildlife’s hunter safety program as an innovative way to promote firearm safety as an alternative to legislation and regulation.

“Nevada’s hunter safety program is an example of outside the box thinking that educates the public without removing our constitutional rights,” Turner said. “We need our elected officials to model after programs that are working within the Constitution rather than create new laws that further limit the rights of law-abiding Americans.”

Mayors oversee city resources, such as parks & recreation departments, that could be utilized to offer firearms safety classes to their residents. Just as the national and Nevada’s hunter safety programs have drastically reduced firearms accidents while hunting, firearms safety classes can reduce firearms accidents and misuse within their jurisdictions without infringing on the Constitution.

The Nevada Firearms Coalition is a Nevada non-partisan grassroots organization of gun owners dedicated to the safe and responsible use of firearms for self-defense, competition, recreation, and hunting. NVFAC is committed to working with all elected officials to develop policies that will create safe communities without infringing on Nevadan’s 2nd Amendment Rights.

Don Turner can be reached for comment at (702) 373-5935 or Don@NVFAC.org.

Silver State Gun Owners Thank Governor Brian Sandoval for Protecting Second Amendment

CARSON CITY, NV – The Nevada Firearms Coalition thanks Governor Brian Sandoval for his veto of SB 221.The Governor put the wishes of his constituents over the lobbying and advertising dollars of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his gun control group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

In the days since SB 221 passed the Assembly with all Republicans and four Democrats in opposition, Governor Sandoval has been bombarded with calls and e-mails urging him to pass or veto the controversial bill.Telephone calls came in such large numbers that the Governor’s office had to set up a separate telephone line to handle the traffic, which was running four to one against SB 221 and in favor of a veto.

The Nevada Firearms Coalition and the NRA has vigorously opposed the bill, as have thousands of sportsman, wildlife and citizen’s groups and the Nevada Sheriffs and Chiefs Association, citing due process and Second Amendment concerns, and serious issues with the enforcement sections of the bill. As is frequently the case with gun control laws, the weight of SB 221 would have fallen on law-abiding gun owners, while criminals would have ignored it. It also would have disincentivized those with mental health problems from seeking help for fear of forfeiting their constitutional right to keep and bear arms.

We applaud Governor Sandoval for listening to the citizens of the Silver State and letting Nevada’s laws be made by Nevadans and not by out-of-state lobbyists and activists. Concerned citizens can express their thanks to Governor Sandoval by using this link.

Senate Action on Gun Bills this Week

Dear NRA Member:

The U.S. Senate is set to act on anti-gun legislation as early as this week. These proposals are the latest attempt by anti-gun Senators to erode our Second Amendment rights by making it illegal for law-abiding gun owners to transfer firearms without the federal government’s approval; and by banning commonly owned semi-automatic rifles and magazines, to name a few. Unfortunately, none of these proposals address the critical issues of fixing our broken mental health system; securing our schools; or prosecuting violent criminals.

However, there is a proposal worthy of gun owners' support. Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Mark Begich (D-AK) have introduced S. 480, the "NICS Reporting Improvement Act of 2013", which will provide accurate definitions of persons who pose serious threats to themselves or others and therefore should be prohibited from purchasing or possessing firearms, while protecting the rights of those who should not be included in NICS. Further, this legislation will protect the rights of America's veterans, by no longer allowing their Second Amendment freedoms to be denied based on an administrative finding that a person requires appointment of a representative to mange his financial affairs.

The NRA fully supports Senators Graham and Begich's important legislation.

The time is now. Please contact your U.S. Senators today, let them know you are a NRA member and encourage them to support S. 480 and to oppose all anti-gun legislation.

You can contact your U.S. Senators at 202-224-3121.

NV Legislative Firearms Update - From Senator Settelmeyer:

I am sending this email to you to keep you informed about firearm legislation.

Today I introduced SB226 pertaining to CCW's in Nevada. It seeks to create uniformity in our laws. If passed it would do away with all CCW cards, which we have 17 different ones in the state, and instead makes it an endorsement on your driver's license. A person can choose to get a separate Identification Card without the endorsement for banking or other purposes. Missouri has been doing it this way for over a decade with no issues. The bill also seeks to end Clark counties hand gun registration, blue card, program. Currently if you are in Clark county for more than 48 hours you are supposed to register your handgun with Las Vegas Metro. Additionally, SB76 the one gun all gun CCW bill has been assigned to the assembly committee on Judiciary.

The following is a link to view or submit your opinion on legislation.
